Oil Futures Fall 1.84% as Gold Edges Lower and Bitcoin Slips

Commodity prices were mostly lower on Monday, Oct. 5, even as U.S. equities advanced. WTI crude oil futures (CLUSD) fell 1.84% to $89.43 from $91.11 at the Oct. 2 close, a decline of $1.68. FRED's daily WTI spot price, a separate measure, stood at $96.13 for the same date.

Gold (GCUSD) edged down 0.13% to $4,156.80 from $4,162.30, a move of $5.50. Bitcoin slipped 0.88% to $85,748.96, measured against its Oct. 4 close of $86,507.11, a decline of $758.15.

In currencies, the UUP dollar fund rose 0.35% to 28.99, and the Fed's broad dollar index stood at 121.27. A Wall Street Journal headline read “Asian Currencies Consolidate Ahead of U.S. Data.” CNBC reported that India's finance minister flagged a trade impasse with the U.S., under the headline “Little room for ‘giving and taking': India's finance minister flags trade impasse with the U.S.”

Energy policy also appeared in the day's coverage. Reuters reported “Trump signs order to expand access to tax-exempt diesel.” The headline did not reference a specific price move.

On the equity side, the Energy sector fund XLE rose 1.00% to 63.45 while crude futures declined, and Materials (XLB) led all sectors with a 1.31% gain. In rates, the 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.31% and the VIX at 15.52, according to FRED data for Oct. 5. Gold and bitcoin both finished below their prior closes, while the dollar fund posted the only gain among the four market instruments covered here.
